✧ 'Utbah b. Rabi'ah was a friend of Sa'd b. Mu'adh in pre-Islamic times. Whenever 'Utbah came to Madinah, he would stay with Sa'd b. Mu'adh, and whenever Sa'd came to Makkah, he would stay with 'Utbah. 'Utbah used to call him 'my Yathribi brother.' He said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ came to Madinah, Sa'd b. Mu'adh came to Makkah as he used to, and stayed with 'Utbah. He said: 'I want to circumambulate the House.' 'Utbah said to him: 'Wait until the notables of Quraysh disperse from the mosque or from around the House.' He said: He waited a little, then said to him: 'Come with me.' When they came to the House, Abu Jahl met Sa'd and said: 'O Sa'd, you have given shelter to Muhammad, and now you circumambulate the House in safety?' Sa'd said to him: 'If you prevent me, I will certainly cut off your trade route to such-and-such a place'—a place he mentioned. He said: Their voices rose, and 'Utbah said to Sa'd: 'Do you raise your voice against Abu al-Hakam?' He said: Sa'd said to him: 'And you say this? I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: "He [Abu Jahl] will kill you."' He said: He pulled his hand away from his and said: 'Muhammad does not lie.' He said: Sa'd circumambulated, then left. 'Utbah came to his wife and said: 'Did you not hear what my Yathribi brother said?' She said: 'What did he say?' He said: 'He claimed that Muhammad will kill me, and Muhammad does not lie.' He said: It was only a short time until the affair of Badr. He said: Abu Jahl began going around among the people,
