✧ I was walking with 'Abdullah when 'Uthman b. 'Affan met him and spoke with him. 'Uthman said to him: 'O Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, will you not marry, or shall I marry you to a young girl who will remind you of what has passed of your time?' 'Abdullah said: 'Since you have said that, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ indeed said to us: "O company of young men, whoever among you is able to marry should marry, for it is more effective in lowering the gaze. And whoever is not able should fast, for it will be a shield for him."'

machine translationYaḥyā b. Maʿīn was asked about the hadith of Abū Maʿshar, and he said: "A mistake; al-Aʿmash contradicted him."

machine translationHe was also asked about the hadith of ʿAlqamah, from ʿAbdullāh, from the Prophet ﷺ: "Whoever among you is able to marry, let him marry" (the hadith). He said: It is narrated by al-Aʿmash, al-Mughīrah, Manṣūr, Ḥammād and Abū Ḥamzah, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAlqamah, from ʿAbdullāh. Abū Maʿshar contradicted them: he narrated it from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAlqamah, and traced it back to ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān. The statement of al-Aʿmash and those who followed him is more correct (aṣaḥḥ).
