machine translationHe was asked about the hadith of ʿAmr b. Ḥurayth, from Saʿīd b. Zayd, from the Prophet ﷺ, concerning truffles: "They are part of the manna, and their water is a cure for the eye." He said: ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmayr narrates it from ʿAmr b. Ḥurayth, and there is disagreement about it from him. Al-Thawrī, Zā'idah, Jarīr b. Ḥāzim, Abū ʿAwānah, Ziyād al-Bakkā'ī, ʿUmar b. ʿUbayd, Muʿtamir b. Sulaymān, ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAmr, al-Jarrāḥ b. al-Ḍaḥḥāk, Sharīk, Yazīd b. ʿAṭā', Qays b. al-Rabīʿ, ʿAbd al-Ḥakīm b. Manṣūr, Muḥammad b. Shabīb, Muḥammad b. Juḥādah, Shahr b. Ḥawshab, ʿUbaydah b. Ḥumayd and ʿAnbasah b. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid narrated it from ʿAbd al-Malik, and they agreed on its chain and its text. Ibn ʿUyaynah narrated it from ʿAbd al-Malik with this chain, saying in it: "Truffles are part of the manna that was sent down upon the Children of Israel." Al-Ḥasan al-ʿUranī likewise said, from ʿAmr b. Ḥurayth, from Saʿīd b. Zayd, the same as the saying of Ibn ʿUyaynah. Al-Masʿūdī narrated it from ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmayr, from ʿAmr b. Ḥurayth, as a mursal report from the Prophet ﷺ, without mentioning Saʿīd b. Zayd in it. ʿAṭā' b. al-Sā'ib narrated it from ʿAmr b. Ḥurayth, from his father, from the Prophet ﷺ, and he erred in saying "from his father"; we do not know that his father Ḥurayth had companionship with the Prophet ﷺ or heard from him. The correct version is from Saʿīd b. Zayd. It has been said that Saʿīd b. Zayd married the mother of ʿAmr b. Ḥurayth, so ʿAmr was his stepson, and therefore he said "my father narrated to me," meaning only Saʿīd b. Zayd. If that is so, then it is not a disagreement in the chain. And God knows best.
