He was asked about the tamattuʿ of the pilgrim, and he said: The Muhājirūn, the Anṣār, and the wives of the Prophet ﷺ declared their intention (ahallū) in the Farewell Pilgrimage, and we declared ours. When we arrived in Mecca, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Make your intention for Ḥajj an ʿUmrah, except for the one who has garlanded his sacrificial animal." So we circled the House and between al-Ṣafā and al-Marwah, and we went to our wives, and we put on our clothes. And he said: "Whoever has garlanded his sacrificial animal does not come out of iḥrām until the sacrificial animal reaches its place of slaughter." Then on the evening of the Day of Tarwiyah he commanded us to declare our intention for Ḥajj. When we finished the rites, we came and circled the House and between al-Ṣafā and al-Marwah, and our Ḥajj was complete, and we owed the sacrificial animal, as Allah the Exalted said: {فَمَا اسْتَيْسَرَ مِنَ الْهَدْيِ فَمَنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ فَصِيَامُ ثَلاثَةِ أَيَّامٍ فِي الْحَجِّ وَسَبْعَةٍ إِذَا رَجَعْتُمْ}, to your towns. A sheep suffices. So they combined two rites in one year, Ḥajj and ʿUmrah, for Allah revealed it in His Book and in the Sunnah of His Prophet, and He permitted it to everyone except the people of Mecca. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: {ذَلِكَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ أَهْلُهُ حَاضِرِي الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ}. The months of Ḥajj that Allah mentioned are Shawwāl, Dhū al-Qaʿdah, and Dhū al-Ḥijjah. Whoever performs tamattuʿ in these months owes a blood sacrifice or a fast. Rafath is sexual intercourse, fusūq is acts of disobedience, and jidāl is disputation.
