ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar used to give rulings according to what Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed of the concession regarding tamattuʿ, and which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ established as a practice. Some people would say to ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar: "How can you oppose your father, when he forbade that?" ʿAbdullāh would say to them: "Woe to you! Do you not fear Allah? Tell me: if ʿUmar ؓ forbade that, seeking good in it and seeking the completion of the ʿumrah, then why do you forbid what Allah has made lawful and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ acted upon? Is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ more deserving that you follow his sunnah, or ʿUmar ؓ?! ʿUmar did not say to you: 'An ʿumrah in the months of Hajj is forbidden,' but he said: 'The most complete form of ʿumrah is that you perform it separately from the months of Hajj.'"

machine translationThe narration of Ibn ʿUmar concerning tamattuʿ cannot be relied upon, for two reasons. One of them is that his statement is inconsistent (muḍṭarib): Bakr b. ʿAbdullāh narrated from him that he said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pronounced the talbiyah for Hajj alone.
