A woman came to the Prophet ﷺ while we were with him, and she said: "O Messenger of Allah, my husband Safwān b. al-Muʿaṭṭal beats me when I pray, makes me break my fast when I fast, and does not pray the Fajr prayer until the sun has risen." He said: Safwān was with him, so he asked him about what she had said. He said: "O Messenger of Allah, as for her saying, 'He beats me when I pray': she recites two sūrahs which I have forbidden her from, and I said: If it were one sūrah, it would suffice the people. As for her saying, 'He makes me break my fast when I fast': she goes off and fasts while I am a young man, and I cannot be patient." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said on that day: "A woman must not fast except with the permission of her husband." "As for her saying that I do not pray until the sun has risen: we are a household known for that; we hardly wake up until the sun has risen." He said: "Then when you wake up, pray."
