That he heard Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān on the day of ʿĀshūrāʾ, in the year he performed the Hajj, while he was on the pulpit, saying: "O people of Medina, where are your scholars? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'This day is the day of ʿĀshūrāʾ, and Allah has not prescribed its fasting for you; so whoever wishes, let him fast, and whoever wishes, let him break the fast.'"

machine translationAl-Zuhrī narrates it, and there is disagreement about him. It was narrated by Mālik b. Anas, Ṣāliḥ b. Kaysān, Mūsā b. ʿUqbah, Muḥammad b. Abī ʿAtīq, Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah, Shuʿayb b. Abī Ḥamzah, Maʿmar, ʿUqayl, Yūnus, al-Awzāʿī, the nephew of al-Zuhrī, Abū Uways, Sufyān b. Ḥusayn and al-Nuʿmān b. Rāshid, and they did not differ about al-Zuhrī, from Ḥumayd. Abū al-ʿUṭūf narrated it from al-Zuhrī and said: from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Taymī, from Muʿāwiyah. ʿAbd al-Jabbār b. ʿUmar al-Aylī narrated it from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, from Ibrāhīm b. Qāriẓ, from Muʿāwiyah. Al-Nuʿmān b. Rāshid narrated it from al-Zuhrī, from al-Sāʾib b. Yazīd, from Muʿāwiyah. The sound (ṣaḥīḥ) one is the hadith of al-Zuhrī from Ḥumayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān.
