The Prophet ﷺ went out with ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf (may God be pleased with him) to the palm grove, and there was his son Ibrāhīm breathing his last. He placed him in his lap and his eyes overflowed with tears. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf said: "Do you weep, while you forbid the people?" He said: "I did not forbid weeping; I only forbade wailing, which is two foolish, wicked sounds: a sound at the tune of amusement, play and the pipes of Satan, and a sound at a calamity, with the scratching of faces, the tearing of garment openings, and shrieking. But this is mercy, and whoever does not show mercy will not be shown mercy. O Ibrāhīm, were it not that this is a certain matter and a true promise, and that the last of us will join the first of us, we would grieve for you with a grief even greater than this. Indeed we are grieved for you. The eye weeps and the heart grieves, and we do not say anything that angers the Lord."
