"When a woman dies and they wish to wash her, let them begin with her belly, and let her belly be wiped gently, if she is not pregnant. If she is pregnant, do not move her. When you wish to wash her, begin with her lower part, and throw a concealing cloth over her private parts. Then take a piece of cotton, wash her, and do the washing well. Then put your hand in from under the cloth and wipe her with cotton three times, doing the wiping well, before you perform ablution for her. Then perform ablution for her with water containing lote-tree leaves (sidr). Let a woman pour the water while standing, attending to nothing else. Let the one closest to her wash her, and if not, then a pious woman. If she is young or weak, let another pious Muslim woman wash her. When she has finished washing her lower part thoroughly with water and sidr, that is the description of her ablution. Then wash her after that three times with water and sidr, beginning with her head before anything else, and rinse each washing of the sidr away with water. Do not comb her head with a comb. If anything comes out of her after the three washings, make it five, and if it comes after the five, make it seven. Let all of that be an odd number, with water and sidr, so that nothing leaves you in doubt. When it is the last washing, the third or another, put some camphor and some sidr, then put that in a new jar, then sit her up and pour it over her, beginning with her head until you reach her feet. When you have finished with her, throw a clean cloth over her, then put your hand in from behind the cloth and remove it from her. This is the description of the washing. Then stuff her lower part with cotton as much as you can, then wipe her cotton with some of her perfume. Then take a long, washed sabaniyyah cloth and tie it around her hips as a waistband is tied, then knot it between her thighs and bring her thighs together. Then let the end of the sabaniyyah fall from her hips to near her knee. This is the description of her lower part. Then perfume her, shroud her, and braid her hair in three plaits: the forelock and two side plaits, and do not make her resemble men. Let her shroud be five garments, one of which is the one in which her thighs are wrapped. Do not remove anything from her hair, meaning with depilatory lime or anything else. Whatever falls from her hair, wash it, then return it to the hair of her head, or he said: fasten it in. And perfume the hair of her head, doing the perfuming well, if you wish. Make everything of it odd, and do not forget that. If it seems good to you to fumigate her on her bier, make it a single portion so that it is odd. This is the description of her shroud and her head. If she has smallpox, or is dyed with henna, or the like, take a wide cloth and wash it in water. In other than this narration: dip it in water. Then in our narration: and follow every part of her, and do not move her, for I fear that something will burst out of her that cannot be put back."
