Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was suffering from a fever, with a velvet cloak over him. He placed his hand on him and felt its heat above the cloak. Abū Saʿīd said: "How intense is the heat of your fever, O Messenger of Allah!" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Thus it is with us: trial is made severe for us, and the reward is multiplied for us." Then he said: "O Messenger of Allah, who are the people most severely tried?" He said: "The prophets." He said: "Then who?" He said: "Then the scholars." He said: "Then who?" He said: "Then the righteous. One of them would be tried with poverty until he found nothing but a cloak to wear, and one of them would be tried with lice until they killed him. And one of them would rejoice more in trial than one of you rejoices in a gift."
