ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb (may God be pleased with him) saw ʿUṭārid al-Tamīmī displaying a silk-striped garment (ḥullah sīrāʾ) in the market. He was a man who frequented kings and received gifts from them. ʿUmar (may God be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of God, I saw ʿUṭārid displaying a silk-striped garment in the market. If only you were to buy it and wear it for the delegations of the Arabs when they come to you." He said: And I think he said: "and wear it on Friday." The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Only one who has no share in the Hereafter wears silk in this world." Then after that, some silk-striped garments were brought to the Messenger of God ﷺ. He sent one garment to ʿUmar (may God be pleased with him), sent one garment to Usāmah (may God be pleased with him), and gave one garment to ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib (may God be pleased with him), and said to him: "Tear it into head-coverings for the women of your household." ʿUmar came carrying his garment and said: "O Messenger of God, you sent me this, and yesterday you said what you said about the garment of ʿUṭārid." He said: "I did not send it to you for you to wear it; I only sent it to you so that you might benefit from it." As for Usāmah, he went out in his garment, and the Messenger of God ﷺ looked at him with a look by which he knew that the Messenger of God ﷺ disapproved of what he had done. He said: "O Messenger of God, why do you look at me when you were the one who sent it to me?" He ﷺ said: "I did not send it to you for you to wear it, but I sent it to you so that you might tear it into head-coverings for the women of your household."
