I witnessed the fear prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We formed two rows behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the enemy was between us and the qiblah. The Prophet ﷺ said the takbīr and we all said the takbīr; then he bowed and we all bowed; then he rose and we all rose. Then the Prophet ﷺ went down to prostrate, together with the row that was next to him, while the rear row stood facing the enemy. When the Prophet ﷺ had finished the prostration, together with the row next to him, and they stood up, the rear row went down to prostrate. When they had finished their prostration and stood up, the rear row moved forward and the front row moved back. Then he bowed and we all bowed; then he rose and we all rose. Then the Prophet ﷺ went down to prostrate, together with the row next to him, which was the front row, that had been the rear row in the first rakʿah. When he had finished the prostration, together with the row next to him, the rear row went down to prostrate, and they prostrated. Jābir said: Just as these guards of yours do with their commanders.
