When the sun passed its zenith while he was at his lodging, he would combine the Ẓuhr and the ʿAṣr prayers. If it had not yet passed its zenith by the time he set out, he would travel until the time of ʿAṣr entered, then he would dismount and combine Ẓuhr and ʿAṣr. When the sun set while he was at his lodging, he would combine the Maghrib and the ʿIshā' prayers. If it had not yet set by the time he set out, he would travel until he reached the time of al-ʿAtamah, then he would dismount and combine Maghrib and ʿIshā'.
