On one of the nights the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood in such and such a place and prayed the last evening prayer (ʿishāʾ) there. When he saw that the people had remained with him in his place of prayer, he went off to his dwelling. Then, when the eyes had closed and his place was empty, he stood there alone. Abū Dharr said: So I came and stood behind him, and he gestured to his right. Then ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd came and stood behind him and behind me. He said: He gestured to him with his left hand. So we stood like this — he joined together the index finger, the middle finger, and the other one that is next to the little finger — each man among us praying for himself.
