I and al-Qāsim b. Muḥammad were talking in the presence of ʿĀʾishah (may God be pleased with her). Al-Qāsim was a man who often made mistakes in speech, and he was the son of a concubine (umm walad). ʿĀʾishah said to him: "What is the matter with you that you do not speak as this son of my brother speaks? I know where you went wrong. This one was taught manners by his mother, and you were taught manners by your mother." He said: Al-Qāsim b. Muḥammad became angry and bore a grudge against her. When he saw that the table of ʿĀʾishah (may God be pleased with her) had been brought, he got up. She said: "Where to?" He said: "To pray." She said: "Sit down." He said: "I am going to pray." She said: "Sit down, you traitor! I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: 'There is no prayer when food is served, nor when one is being pressed by the two filthy things (urine and stool).'"

  • Ibn Abī Ḥatim

machine translationMy father was asked about a hadith narrated by Abū Maʿshar, from Hishām b. ʿUrwah, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, from the Prophet ﷺ, that he would not pray while he felt something in his belly. My father said: Abū Maʿshar did nothing [of value]; rather it is Hishām, from his father, from ʿAbdullāh b. al-Arqam, from the Prophet ﷺ. What Abū Maʿshar meant was the hadith of ʿĀʾishah which Ibn Abī ʿAtīq narrates from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, from the Prophet ﷺ: "None of you should pray when food is served, nor while he is holding back the two filthy things."
