The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out one night in the middle of the night to pray in the mosque, and some men prayed, praying with his prayer. In the morning the people talked about it, and more than they gathered. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out on the second night and prayed, and they prayed with him. In the morning the people talked about it, and the people of the mosque became many on the third night. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out and they prayed with his prayer. When the fourth night came, the mosque could not hold its people, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not come out to them. Some of the men began to say, "The prayer!" But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not come out to them until he came out for the dawn prayer. When he had finished the Fajr prayer, he turned to the people, recited the testification (tashahhud), and then said: "To proceed: your situation last night was not hidden from me, but I feared that it would be made obligatory upon you and you would be unable to perform it." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to encourage them to pray the night prayer of Ramadan without commanding them with a binding order concerning it, and he would say: "Whoever stands in prayer in Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward, his previous sins will be forgiven." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died while the matter was that way, and the matter continued that way during the caliphate of Abū Bakr and the early part of the caliphate of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb.
