The Prophet ﷺ sent Khālid b. al-Walīd to the people of Yemen to call them to Islam, but they did not respond to him. Then the Prophet ﷺ sent ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, and commanded him to send Khālid and those with him back, except for any man among those with Khālid who wished to stay on with ʿAlī ؓ, for he could stay with him. Al-Barāʾ said: I was among those who stayed on with him. When we drew near the people, they came out to us, and ʿAlī ؓ led us in prayer and arranged us in a single row. Then he went forward in front of us and read to them the letter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and all of Hamdān accepted Islam. ʿAlī ؓ wrote to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about their acceptance of Islam. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ read the letter, he fell down in prostration, then raised his head and said: "Peace be upon Hamdān, peace be upon Hamdān."
