The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to observe iʿtikāf in the middle ten days of Ramadan. One year he observed iʿtikāf until, when it was the night of the twenty-first, which is the night in whose morning he would come out from his iʿtikāf, he said: "Whoever observed iʿtikāf with me, let him observe iʿtikāf in the last ten days. I was shown this night, then I was made to forget it, and I saw myself on its morning prostrating in water and mud. So seek it in the last ten days, and seek it in every odd night." Abū Saʿīd said: The sky rained that night, and the mosque had a roof of palm branches, so the mosque leaked. Abū Saʿīd said: My own eyes saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turn to us, with the traces of water and mud on his forehead and nose, on the morning of the twenty-first.
