We came to Jābir b. ʿAbdullāh in his mosque while he was praying in a single garment, wrapped in it. I stepped over the people until I sat between him and the qiblah, and I said: "May God have mercy on you! Do you pray in a single garment while this wrapper of yours is beside you?" He said: "I wanted a fool like you to come in upon me and see how I act, and then do the same." Then he mentioned a long hadith, in which: The Messenger of God ﷺ stood, meaning to pray, and I had a cloak. I went to cross its two ends over each other, but it did not reach around me, and it had a fringe, so I turned it upside down, then crossed its two ends, then bent my neck over it. Then I came and stood at the left of the Messenger of God ﷺ. He took me by my hand and turned me around until he made me stand at his right. Then Ibn Ṣakhr came and stood at his left, and he took both of us by our hands and pushed us until he made us stand behind him. The Messenger of God ﷺ began to watch me out of the corner of his eye without my noticing, then I realized it, and he gestured thus, meaning: tie your waist. When the Messenger of God ﷺ finished, he said: "O Jābir." I said: "At your service, O Messenger of God." He said: "If it is wide, cross its two ends over each other, and if it is narrow, then tie it around your waist."
