And Abū Aḥmad informed us: Muḥammad b. Tammām narrated to us: al-Musayyib b. Wāḍiḥ narrated to us: Mubashshir narrated to us, and he mentioned it with its chain, the same, as a statement of a Companion (mawqūf). This is a ḥadīth about which there is disagreement regarding al-Musayyib b. Wāḍiḥ, and he is mistaken in it in two places: in the mention of Ibn ʿAbbās, and in the mention of the Prophet ﷺ. What is preserved is that it is from the saying of ʿIkrimah, not raised to the Prophet (marfūʿ). Thus it was narrated by Hiql b. al-Ziyād and al-Walīd b. Muslim, from al-Awzāʿī; and likewise it was narrated by Shaybān al-Naḥwī and ʿAlī b. al-Mubārak, from Yaḥyā b. Abī Kathīr, from ʿIkrimah. And al-Musayyib, may God Most High have mercy on us and on him, was prone to many errors. It was also narrated by ʿAbdullāh b. Muḥarrar, from Qatādah, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, as a saying of Ibn ʿAbbās, but ʿAbdullāh b. Muḥarrar is abandoned (matrūk). And it was narrated with a weak chain, from Abān b. Abī ʿAyyāsh, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, raised to the Prophet (marfūʿ), but Abān is abandoned (matrūk). Abū l-Ḥasan al-Dāraquṭnī said in what

machine translationHis statement, "The ḥadīth is well known and the Companions acted upon it": as for its being well known, it is not meant in the technical sense, but he means its fame among the people. As for the Companions acting upon it, that is not established from any of them. Al-Dāraquṭnī reported it through two weak routes from ʿAlī, may God be pleased with him, and through another route weaker than both from Ibn ʿAbbās.
