I prayed the Morning Prayer behind ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb (may God be pleased with him), and I heard him say after the recitation, before bowing: "O God, You alone we worship, and to You we pray and prostrate, and to You we strive and hasten. We hope for Your mercy and fear Your punishment. Indeed Your punishment will overtake the disbelievers. O God, we seek Your help and Your forgiveness, and we praise You with good and do not disbelieve in You, and we believe in You and submit to You, and we cast off whoever disbelieves in You."

- Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī
machine translationEven though this is a sound (ṣaḥīḥ) chain of transmission, more of those who narrated from ʿUmar reported his qunūt after bowing. It was narrated by Abū Rāfiʿ, ʿUbayd b. ʿUmayr, Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī and Zayd b. Wahb, and a greater number is more likely to have preserved it accurately than a single narrator.
