Some young men of the Anṣār used to listen to the Qur'an, then withdraw to a corner of Madīnah. Their families thought they were in the mosque, and the people of the mosque thought they were with their families. They would pray during the night, and when dawn drew near, some of them would gather firewood and some would fetch fresh water. Then they would come and place their bundles and waterskins at the doors of the rooms of the Prophet ﷺ. Then the Prophet ﷺ sent them to Biʾr Maʿūnah, and they were all martyred. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ invoked against those who killed them for fifteen nights.
