machine translationI asked my father and Abū Zurʿah about a hadith narrated by Sufyān al-Thawrī and Sharīk, from al-Aʿmash, from al-Ḥakam b. ʿUtaybah, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Laylā, from Bilāl, from the Prophet ﷺ, concerning wiping over the leather socks. They said: It was also narrated by ʿĪsā b. Yūnus, Abū Muʿāwiyah and Ibn Numayr, from al-Aʿmash, from al-Ḥakam, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Laylā, from Kaʿb b. ʿUjrah, from Bilāl, from the Prophet ﷺ. And Zāʾidah narrated it from al-Aʿmash, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Laylā, from al-Barāʾ, from Bilāl, from the Prophet ﷺ. I said to them: Which of these is the sound one? My father said: The sound one, from the hadith of al-Aʿmash, is from al-Ḥakam, from Ibn Abī Laylā, from Bilāl, without Kaʿb. I said to my father: And apart from the hadith of al-Aʿmash? He said: The sound one is what Shuʿbah says, and Abān b. Taghlib and Zayd b. Abī Unaysah as well, from al-Ḥakam, from Ibn Abī Laylā, from Bilāl, without Kaʿb. My father said: al-Thawrī and Shuʿbah are the best memorizers of them. I said to my father: Layth b. Abī Sulaym narrates and is inconsistent (yaḍṭarib); Yaḥyā b. Yaʿlā narrates from him, from al-Ḥakam, from Ibn Abī Laylā, from Kaʿb b. ʿUjrah, from Bilāl, from the Prophet ﷺ, and from Abū Bakr and ʿUmar, concerning wiping. And Muʿtamir narrated it from Layth, from al-Ḥakam and Ḥabīb b. Abī Thābit, from Shurayḥ b. Hāniʾ, from Bilāl, from the Prophet ﷺ. Abū Zurʿah said: The sound one is the hadith of al-Aʿmash, from al-Ḥakam, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Laylā, from Kaʿb, from Bilāl. My father and Abū Zurʿah said: Layth is not to be occupied with regarding his hadith in a case like this; he is inconsistent in hadith (muḍṭarib al-ḥadīth). I said to Abū Zurʿah: Do not Shuʿbah, Abān b. Taghlib and Zayd b. Abī Unaysah say, from al-Ḥakam, from Ibn Abī Laylā, from Bilāl, without Kaʿb? Abū Zurʿah said: al-Aʿmash is a memorizer (ḥāfiẓ), and Abū Muʿāwiyah, ʿĪsā b. Yūnus and Ibn Numayr, these memorized from him. And apart from the hadith of al-Aʿmash, the sound one is from Ibn Abī Laylā, from Bilāl, without Kaʿb. It was narrated by Manṣūr, Shuʿbah, Zayd b. Abī Unaysah and more than one. I only said this regarding the hadith of al-Aʿmash.
