أَنْبَأَ الشَّافِعِيُّ، أَنْبَأَ يَحْيَى بْنُ سُلَيْمٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ خُثَيْمٍ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ رِفَاعَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ وَالْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَالْأَنْصَارِ مِثْلَهُ، أَوْ مِثْلَ مَعْنَاهُ. قَالَ الشَّافِعِيُّ - رَحِمَهُ اللهُ -: وَأَحْسِبُ هَذَا الْإِسْنَادَ أَحْفَظُ مِنَ الْإِسْنَادِ الْأَوَّلِ. قَالَ الشَّيْخُ - رَحِمَهُ اللهُ -: وَرَوَاهُ إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ خُثَيْمٍ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ رِفَاعَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ: أَنَّ مُعَاوِيَةَ قَدِمَ الْمَدِينَةَ، وَيُحْتَمَلُ أَنْ يَكُونَ ابْنُ خُثَيْمٍ سَمِعَهُ مِنْهُمَا، وَاللهُ أَعْلَمُ

Rifāʿah, from his father, from Muʿāwiyah and the Muhājirūn and the Anṣār, the like of it, or the like of its meaning. Al-Shāfiʿī, may God have mercy on him, said: I think this chain is better preserved than the first chain. The Shaykh, may God have mercy on him, said: Ismāʿīl b. ʿAyyāsh narrated it from Ibn Khuthaym, from Ismāʿīl b. ʿUbayd b. Rifāʿah, from his father, from his grandfather: that Muʿāwiyah came to Medina. It is possible that Ibn Khuthaym heard it from both of them, and God knows best.
