Ibn ʿAbbās led us in the dawn (Ṣubḥ) prayer while he was governor of Basra. He performed the qunūt before bowing and raised his hands so high that, if a man had been in front of him, he would have seen the whiteness of his armpits. When he finished the prayer, he turned to us with his face and said: "This is the prayer which Allah, Mighty and Majestic, mentioned in His Book: {حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلاةِ الْوُسْطَى وَقُومُوا لِلهِ قَانِتِينَ}"
