Sālim, the freedman of Abū Ḥudhayfah, was a freedman of a woman from among us called Salmā bint Yaʿār, who had freed him as a sā'ibah (a freedman with no wala' tie) in the Jāhiliyyah. When he was killed at al-Yamāmah, his inheritance was brought to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ. He called Wadīʿah b. Khidām and said, "This is the inheritance of your freedman, and you have more right to it." He said, "O Commander of the Faithful, God has made us independent of it. Our companion freed him as a sā'ibah, so we do not want to take anything from his affair," or he said, "to diminish [anything]." So ʿUmar ؓ put it in the public treasury (bayt al-māl).
