I came to Bahrain, and the people of Bahrain asked me about the fish that the sea casts up, so I commanded them to eat it. (When I came back, I asked ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ about that, and he said: "What did you command them?" I said: "I commanded them to eat it.") He said: "Had you said otherwise, I would have struck you with the whip." Then ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ recited: {أُحِلَّ لَكُمْ صَيْدُ الْبَحْرِ وَطَعَامُهُ مَتَاعًا لَكُمْ} He said: "Its game is what is caught, and its food is what it casts up."
