I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of Allah, we will meet the enemy tomorrow, and we have no knives?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Let the blood flow, or hasten it. Whatever makes the blood flow and the name of Allah has been mentioned over it, eat of it, so long as it is not a tooth or a nail. And I will tell you about that: as for the tooth, it is a bone, and as for the nail, it is the knife of the Abyssinians." The hasty ones among the people went ahead and hurried, and they took some of the spoils, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was at the rear of the people. They set up cooking pots, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by the pots and ordered that they be overturned, so they were overturned. He divided (the spoils) among them, and he counted one camel as equal to ten sheep. A camel from the people's camels ran away, and they had no horses with them, so a man shot it with an arrow and Allah stopped it. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Among these camels are some that are wild like the wild animals. If any of them does this, then do the same to it as this."

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • عبد الغني بن سعيد الأزدي

أخطأ أبو الأحوص في هذا حيث قال عن أبيه عن جده وقد حذف البخاري في الصحيح قوله عن أبيه فصار عن عباية عن جده رافع وهو الصواب

machine translationAbū al-Aḥwaṣ erred in this when he said "from his father, from his grandfather." Al-Bukhārī in the Ṣaḥīḥ omitted the words "from his father," so it became "from ʿAbāyah, from his grandfather Rāfiʿ," and this is the correct version.

in سنن البيهقي الكبرى, p. 19004
  • Abū Ḥatim al-Rāzī

روى هذا الحديث الثوري وغيره ولم يقولوا فيه عن أبيه قلت فأيهما أصح قال الثوري أحفظ

machine translationAl-Thawrī and others narrated this hadith and did not say in it "from his father." I said: Which of the two is more sound? He said: Al-Thawrī is more retentive (aḥfaẓ).
