Some people of my family ordered me to ask ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAbbās ؓ about some matters on their behalf, so I wrote them on a sheet. I came to him to ask him, and there were people with him asking him questions. They kept asking him until they had asked him about everything in my sheet, and I had not asked him about anything. Then a Bedouin man asked him and said: "I am a slave; I am with the camels of my masters, and a man comes to me asking me for water. Shall I give him a drink?" He said: "No." He said: "But if I fear that he will die?" He said: "Then give him enough to sustain him, then inform your masters of it." He said: "I am a man who shoots game, and some of it dies on the spot (aṣmā) and some of it escapes and dies later (anmā)." He said: "Whatever you kill on the spot, eat it, and whatever dies after escaping, do not eat it."
