Among the terms of the peace settlement of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at al-Ḥudaybiyah between him and Quraysh was that whoever wished to enter into the pact of Muḥammad and his covenant could enter, and whoever wished to enter into the pact of Quraysh and their covenant could enter. So Khuzāʿah hastened and said: "We enter into the pact of Muḥammad and his covenant." And Banū Bakr hastened and said: "We enter into the pact of Quraysh and their covenant." They remained in that truce for about seventeen or eighteen months. Then Banū Bakr, who had entered into the pact of Quraysh and their covenant, attacked by night Khuzāʿah, who had entered into the pact of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his covenant, at a watering place of theirs called al-Watīr, near Makkah. Quraysh said: "Muḥammad does not know about us, and this is the night, and no one sees us." So they helped them against them with horses and weapons, and fought them alongside them out of spite against the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. And ʿAmr b. Sālim rode to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ because of what had happened between Khuzāʿah and Banū Bakr at al-Watīr, until he came to Madīnah to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to inform him of the news. He had composed some verses of poetry, and when he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ he recited them to him: "O Allah, I appeal to Muḥammad, the ancient alliance of our father and his father. We were the parent and you were the child; then we submitted and did not withdraw our hand. So help the Messenger of Allah with ready help, and call the servants of Allah to come as reinforcement. Among them is the Messenger of Allah, having stripped for battle; if he is subjected to humiliation, his face darkens, in a great army flowing like the sea, foaming. Indeed Quraysh broke their promise to you and violated your firm covenant. They claimed that I would call on no one, so they are more abased and fewer in number. They have set an ambush for me at Kadā'. They attacked us by night at al-Watīr while we slept, and killed us while bowing and prostrating." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "You have been helped, O
