What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

machine translationRather, it is weak (ḍaʿīf).

machine translationIn sum, the grounds on which this hadith is faulted are weakness (ḍaʿf) and interruption (inqiṭāʿ).

  • al-Tirmidhi

machine translationI asked Muḥammad, meaning al-Bukhārī, about this hadith. He said: Muḥammad b. Mūsā al-Makhzūmī is not objectionable (lā ba's bihi), close in hadith (muqārib al-ḥadīth); and Yaʿqūb b. Salamah al-Madanī is not known to have heard from his father, and his father is not known to have heard from Abū Hurayrah.

  • Abū ʿAbdullāh al-Ḥākim

machine translationThis hadith has a sound chain (ṣaḥīḥ al-isnād). He said: Muslim relied on Yaʿqūb b. Abī Salamah al-Mājishūn as evidence, and the name of Abū Salamah is Dīnār, but the two (al-Bukhārī and Muslim) did not narrate it.

  • Ibn Ṣalāḥ

machine translationOne should not cite as evidence for the authenticity of this hadith the fact that al-Ḥākim judged its chain to be sound (ṣaḥīḥ), for we examined it and found that its chain had been reversed.

  • Abū Zakariyyā Yaḥyá b. Sharaf al-Nawawī

machine translationAl-Ḥākim's statement, "This hadith is sound (ṣaḥīḥ)," is not correct, because its chain was reversed for him and he became confused. So said al-Ḥāfiẓ.

  • ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Jawzī

machine translationThis is a good (jayyid) hadith.

  • al-Dhahabi

machine translationThis hadith is the best of the hadiths on this topic. He said: Hadiths on this subject have also been narrated that are not upright.

  • ʿAbd al-ʿAẓīm al-Mudhirī

machine translationBecause of the interruption (inqiṭāʿ) in the hadith of Abū Hurayrah.

  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

    machine translationA disconnected (munqaṭiʿ) hadith.

  • Abū ʿAbdullāh al-Ḥākim

machine translationHe declared it sound (ṣaḥḥaḥahu).
