Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq (may God be pleased with him) sent armies to Syria, and he went out walking with Yazīd b. Abī Sufyān, who was the commander of one quarter of those quarters. They claim that Yazīd said to Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq (may God be pleased with him): "Either you ride, or I will dismount." Abū Bakr (may God be pleased with him) said to him: "You will not dismount, and I will not ride; I reckon these steps of mine as being in the cause of God." He said: "You will find a people who claim that they have confined themselves for God; leave them and what they claim they have confined themselves for. And you will find a people who have shaved the middle of their heads of hair; strike with the sword what they have shaved. And I advise you with ten: do not kill a woman, nor a child, nor an aged, decrepit man; do not cut down a fruit-bearing tree; do not destroy anything inhabited; do not hamstring a sheep or a camel except for eating; do not burn a palm tree nor drown it; do not steal from the spoils; and do not be cowardly."
