The people of Basra raided the people of Nahāwand, and the people of Kufa were sent to reinforce them, with ʿAmmār b. Yāsir over them. They reached them after they had already overcome the enemy. The people of Kufa asked for a share of the spoils, and the people of Basra wanted not to apportion any of the spoils to the people of Kufa. A man from Banū Tamīm said to ʿAmmār b. Yāsir: "O you with the cropped ear, do you want to share with us in our spoils?" He said: ʿAmmār's ear had been cut off while with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So they wrote to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ, and ʿUmar wrote back to them: "The spoils belong to those who witnessed the battle."
