I asked ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ. I said: "Tell me about the worst thing the polytheists did to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He said: ʿUqbah b. Abī Muʿayṭ came while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was praying at the Kaʿbah. He twisted his garment around his neck and strangled him violently. Then Abū Bakr ؓ came, took hold of his shoulders, and pushed him away from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: "Would you kill a man because he says, 'My Lord is Allah,' when he has come to you with clear proofs from your Lord?"
