The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us on a military expedition to al-Ḥuraqāt. They had been warned, so they fled. We caught up with a man, and when we overtook him he said: "There is no god but Allah." We struck him until we killed him. Something about that stirred in my heart, so I mentioned it to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said: "Who will answer for you regarding "There is no god but Allah" on the Day of Resurrection?!" I said: "O Messenger of Allah, he only said it for fear of the weapon and of being killed." He said: "Did you not split open his heart so that you would know whether he said it for that reason or not? Who will answer for you regarding "There is no god but Allah" on the Day of Resurrection?" He said: He kept saying it until I wished that I had not become Muslim before that day.
