When it was the Day of the Camel, and the horses were in turmoil and the people were raiding, the people came to ʿAlī ؓ claiming various things and they said a great deal to him, but he did not understand. He said: "Is there no man who can gather their speech for me into five or six words?" He said: So I sprang up on one of my feet, and said to myself: If he understands, he will accept my words, and if not, I will sit down nearby. I said: "O Commander of the Believers, the speech is not five or six words, but it is two words." He said: He looked at me. He said: I said: "Wrongdoing (haḍm) or retaliation (qiṣāṣ)." He said: Then he made the sign of thirty with his hand and said: "Qālūn! Do you see what you have counted? It is under these two feet of mine."
