That he was among the army who were with ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib (may God be pleased with him) who marched against the Khawārij. ʿAlī (may God be pleased with him) said: "O people, I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: 'There will emerge from my nation a people who recite the Qur'an; your recitation is nothing compared to their recitation, nor your prayer compared to their prayer, nor your fasting compared to their fasting. They recite the Qur'an, but their prayer does not pass beyond their collarbones. They pass through Islam as the arrow passes through the game.' If the army that fights them knew what God has decreed for them upon the tongue of their Prophet ﷺ, they would rely on it and abandon action. The sign of that is that among them is a man who has an upper arm but no forearm, on his upper arm like the nipple of a woman's breast, upon which are white hairs. Would you go to Muʿāwiyah and the people of Syria and leave these people to succeed you over your offspring and your wealth? By God, I hope that they are these very people; for they have shed blood and raided the people's pasturing livestock. So march in the name of God." Salamah said: Zayd b. Wahb made me stop at each stage, one by one, until he said: We passed over a bridge. He said: When we met them, the leader of the Khawārij that day was ʿAbdullāh b. Wahb al-Rāsibī, and he said to them: "Throw down the spears and draw your swords from their sheaths; for I fear that they will adjure you as they adjured you on the day of Ḥarūrāʾ, and you went back." He said: So they cast aside their spears and drew their swords, and the people thrust at them with their spears. He said: So they were killed one upon another, and none of the people were hit that day except two men. ʿAlī (may God be pleased with him) said: "Look among them for the one with the deformed arm." They did not find him, so ʿAlī (may God be pleased with him) got up himself and searched for him and found him. He said: "God spoke the truth and His Messenger conveyed it." Then ʿUbaydah al-Salmānī stood up to him and said: "O Commander of the Believers, by God besides whom there is no god, did you hear this ḥadīth from the Messenger of God ﷺ?" He said: "Yes, by God besides whom there is no god," until he made him swear three times, and he swore to him.
