When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was taken in death, the Anṣār said: "From us a leader, and from you a leader." He said: So ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to them and said: "O assembly of the Anṣār, do you not know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded Abū Bakr to lead the people in prayer? So which of you would be content to put himself ahead of Abū Bakr?" The Anṣār said: "We seek refuge in Allah from putting ourselves ahead of Abū Bakr."
