That the group whom ʿUmar had appointed gathered and consulted together. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf said to them: "I am not the one who will compete with you for this matter, but if you wish, I will choose for you from among yourselves." So they entrusted that to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf. When they entrusted their affair to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf, the people flocked to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān and turned toward him, so that I did not see anyone among the people following any one of that group, nor treading in his footsteps. The people turned to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, consulting him and conversing with him privately that night, until came the night at the end of which we woke and pledged allegiance to ʿUthmān. Al-Miswar said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān came to me after a portion of the night had passed, and knocked on the door, and I woke up. He said: "I see you sleeping! By God, I have not had much sleep these three nights. Go and call al-Zubayr and Saʿd." So I called them for him, and he consulted them. Then he called me and said: "Call ʿAlī for me." So I called him, and he conversed with him privately until the night was well advanced. Then he rose from him in hope, though ʿAbd al-Raḥmān had feared something from ʿAlī. Then he said: "Call ʿUthmān for me." So he conversed with him privately for a long time until the muezzin separated them with the call to the dawn prayer. When the people had prayed the dawn prayer and that group had gathered at the pulpit, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān sent for whoever was present of the Emigrants and the Anṣār, and he sent for the commanders, who had come that year for the pilgrimage with ʿUmar. When they had gathered, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān recited the testimony of faith and said: "To proceed: O ʿAlī, I have looked into the matter of the people and I did not see them regarding anyone as equal to ʿUthmān, so do not make a way against yourself." And he took ʿUthmān by the hand and said: "I pledge allegiance to you on the Sunnah of God, the Sunnah of His Messenger, and the two caliphs after him." So ʿAbd al-Raḥmān pledged allegiance to him, and the people pledged allegiance to him: the Emigrants, the Anṣār, the commanders of the armies, and the Muslims.
