I sat with Abū Hurayrah for five years, and I heard him narrate from the Prophet ﷺ who said: "The Children of Israel were governed by prophets; whenever a prophet died, another prophet succeeded him. But there is no prophet after me, and there will be caliphs, and they will be many." They said: "What do you command us?" He said: "Fulfil the pledge of allegiance to the first, then the first. Give them their due, for Allah will question them about those whom He placed under their care."
