In the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the blood-money (diyah) was one hundred camels, each camel being valued at one ūqiyyah, which made four thousand. Then when ʿUmar ؓ was caliph, camels became expensive and silver became cheap, so ʿUmar ؓ made it two ūqiyyahs per camel, which made eight thousand dirhams. Then camels continued to grow more expensive and silver cheaper, until ʿUmar ؓ made it twelve thousand in silver, or a thousand dinars, and two hundred cows in the case of cattle, and two thousand sheep in the case of sheep.
