Qatādah b. ʿAbdullāh had a slave woman who used to tend his sheep. One day he sent her out to tend them, and his son said to her: "Until when will you keep her [unclear] my mother! By God, you will not [unclear] her more than you have already." Then he struck his hamstring and stabbed him in his flank, and he died. He said: Surāqah b. Mālik b. Juʿshum mentioned that to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ, and he said to him: "Come to me next year, and with you forty," or he said: "one hundred and twenty camels." He said: So he did. Then ʿUmar ؓ took from them thirty ḥiqqah camels, thirty jadhaʿah camels, and forty between a thaniyyah and a bāzil in its year, all of them pregnant (khalifah), and he gave them to his brothers, and he did not let his father inherit anything from them.

Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather, from ʿUmar, from the Prophet ﷺ. Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd al-Anṣārī narrated it from ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb, and there is disagreement about him as well: Ismāʿīl b. ʿAyyāsh narrated it from Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd, from ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather. ʿAlī b. Mushir narrated it from Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd, from ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb, from his father, from ʿUmar. Mālik b. Anas, Ḥammād b. Salamah, Abū Khālid al-Aḥmar, Hushaym, Yazīd b. Hārūn and others narrated it from Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd, from ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb as a mursal report from ʿUmar, from the Prophet ﷺ. Likewise ʿAbd al-Karīm Abū Umayyah narrated it from ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb, also as a mursal report from ʿUmar. The mursal version is more likely to be correct.
