A man stood up before ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb (may God be pleased with him) while he was on the pulpit and said: "O Commander of the Believers, your governor wronged me and struck me." ʿUmar said: "By God, then I will have retaliation taken from him against you." ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ said: "O Commander of the Believers, will you have retaliation taken from your governor?" He said: "Yes, by God, I will have retaliation taken from them. The Messenger of God ﷺ submitted himself to retaliation, and Abū Bakr submitted himself to retaliation; so shall I not have retaliation taken?" ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ said: "Or something other than that, O Commander of the Believers." He said: "And what is it?" He said: "Or what would satisfy him." He said: "Or that."
