Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq ؓ stood on a Friday and said: "Tomorrow morning, bring the camels of the charity so that they may be distributed, and let no one enter upon us except with permission." A woman said to her husband: "Take this halter; perhaps God will provide us with a camel." The man refused, but he found Abū Bakr and ʿUmar ؓ had already entered among the camels, so he entered with them. Abū Bakr ؓ turned and said: "What made you enter upon us?" Then he took the halter from him and struck him with it. When Abū Bakr had finished distributing the camels, he called for the man, gave him the halter and said: "Take retaliation." ʿUmar said to him: "By God, he will not take retaliation. Do not make it a precedent." Abū Bakr said: "Then who will answer for me before God on the Day of Resurrection?" ʿUmar ؓ said: "Satisfy him." So Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq ؓ ordered his servant to bring him his riding camel with its saddle, a woollen cloak, and five dinars, and he satisfied him with them.
