A man from the Anṣār came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of Allah, what do you think of a man who finds another man with his wife? Should he kill him, or how should he act?" So Allah revealed concerning him what is mentioned in the Qur'an about the matter of the two who exchange oaths of condemnation (al-mutalāʿinān). The Prophet ﷺ said: "Allah has decreed concerning you and your wife." He said: So they exchanged the oaths of condemnation in the mosque while I was present. When they had finished, he said: "I have lied about her, O Messenger of Allah, if I keep her." So he divorced her three times before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded him, when they had finished the mutual condemnation. So he separated from her in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ, and he said: "That is a separation between every two who exchange oaths of condemnation." Ibn Jurayj said: Ibn Shihāb said: The established practice (sunnah) after them was that the two who exchange oaths of condemnation are separated. She was pregnant, and her son was called by his mother's name. Then the practice continued regarding her inheritance, that she inherits from him and he inherits from her what Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has prescribed for them. Ibn Jurayj said, from Ibn Shihāb, from Sahl b. Saʿd, in this hadith, that the Prophet ﷺ said: "If she brings him forth reddish, short, like a wahara (a small lizard), then I think only that she has spoken the truth and he has lied about her. But if she brings him forth black, with large eyes, and heavy buttocks, then I think only that he has spoken the truth about her."
