That he divorced his wife with one divorce while she was menstruating, then he wanted to follow it with the two other divorces at the two remaining periods of purity (qurʾayn). That reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: "O Ibn ʿUmar, this is not what Allah commanded you. You have erred against the Sunnah. The Sunnah is that you wait for the time of purity, and then divorce at each period of purity." He said: So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded me, and I took her back. Then he said: "When she is pure, then divorce at that time or keep her." I said: O Messenger of Allah, what if I had divorced her three times, would it have been lawful for me to take her back? He said: "She would have been separated from you, and it would have been a sin."

  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

لم يعله إلا بعطاء الخراساني وقال إنه أتى في هذا الحديث بزيادات لم يتابع عليها وهو ضعيف في الحديث لا يقبل ما تفرد به

machine translationHe found it defective only because of ʿAṭāʾ al-Khurāsānī, and said that he brought in this hadith additions in which he was not corroborated, and that he is weak (ḍaʿīf) in hadith, and what he alone narrates is not accepted.

  • Ishbīlī

أعله بمعلى بن منصور وقال رماه أحمد بالكذب

machine translationHe found it defective because of Muʿallā b. Manṣūr, and said that Aḥmad accused him of lying.
