Al-Walīd b. Yazīd wrote to the governors of the provinces, instructing them to write to him about divorce before marriage, for he had been tried by this. So he wrote to his governor in Yemen, who summoned Ibn Ṭāwūs, Ismāʿīl b. Sharūs and Simāk b. al-Faḍl. Ibn Ṭāwūs informed them from his father, Ismāʿīl b. Sharūs from ʿAṭāʾ b. Abī Rabāḥ, and Simāk from Wahb b. Munabbih, that they said: There is no divorce before marriage. He said: Then Simāk said from himself: Marriage is only a knot that is tied, and divorce unties it, so how can a knot be untied before it is tied? Al-Walīd admired his statement and adopted it, and he wrote to his governor in Yemen to appoint him to the judgeship.
