A group of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by one of the Arab tribes, and among them was a person who had been stung or bitten. They said: "Is there among you a reciter of ruqyah? For at the water there is a person who has been stung or bitten." So one of the men went and recited ruqyah over a flock of sheep, and he recovered. When he came back to his companions, they disliked that and said: "You took payment for the Book of Allah!" Then when they came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him of that. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called the man and asked him, and he said: "O Messenger of Allah, we passed by one of the Arab tribes, and among them was a person who had been stung or bitten. They said: 'Is there among you a reciter of ruqyah?' So I recited ruqyah over him with Fātiḥat al-Kitāb, and he recovered." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The most deserving thing for which you may take payment is the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic."
