"Ibn ʿUmar—may God forgive him—was mistaken. Rather, this clan of the Anṣār, who were idol-worshippers, lived alongside this clan of the Jews, who were People of the Book. They regarded the Jews as having superiority over them, so they imitated much of what they did. And it was among the practice of the People of the Book that they would approach women only in one manner, which is the most concealing way for a woman. This clan of the Anṣār had adopted that from their practice. As for this clan of Quraysh, they would uncover women in a shameful manner, and take pleasure from them from the front, from behind, and lying on their backs. When the Muhājirūn came to Medina, one of them married a woman of the Anṣār and set about doing that with her. She objected to him and said: 'We were only approached in one manner, so do that, or else keep away from me.' Their matter became serious, and that reached the Prophet ﷺ. So God, Blessed and Exalted, revealed: {Your women are a tilth for you, so come to your tilth however you wish}, from the front, from behind, and lying on the back, meaning by that the place of the child."
