The polytheists were in two positions with respect to the Prophet ﷺ and the believers: the polytheists of the Arabs who were people of war, whom he fought and who fought him; and polytheists who were people of a treaty, whom he did not fight and who did not fight him. And when a woman emigrated from the people of war, she was not asked for in marriage until she had menstruated and become pure. When she had become pure, marriage became lawful for her. If her husband emigrated before she married, she was returned to him.
